To carry out rice polishing (sei-mai) on a large scale, the following equipment is necessary in addition to the vertical-construction rice polishing machinery used to polish rice for brewing.
- Genmai tank for storing loose brown rice.
- Brown rice transporter: to carry the brown rice to the hopper of the rice polishing machine proper.
- “Rice Master”: a large rice polishing machine designed to raise polishing efficiency. The rice is transferred to the main machine after the early stages of polishing (up to 85%) have been finished.
- Dust arrester and dust collector. Apparatus for removing and collecting fine particles of bran and rice powder dispersed into the air during polishing.
- “Rotary shifter”: a device in which the white rice flowing through the machine passes over a metal sieve in order to separate the rice powder.
- “Rice polisher”: a device to remove rice powder from the surface of the grains with a brush.
- Grain sorter: apparatus which separates out small, flawed grains in advance.
- Colour sorter: machine which distinguishes foreign bodies from rice by colour, then flicks them away.
